Yep. Fairly common, actually. Sometimes it's because what I've written sucks, frankly. Other times I'm just too close to see it in perspective.

After writing the first few chapters of my novel, The Lost Scrolls, I went back and read what I had... and hated it. I dropped the whole project and did something else for a few months. Then, one day I decided to take a look at it again. After reading the first chapter, I instantly saw what was wrong with it. A relatively minor tweak later, and I was off and running.

The novel is now set to be published in May, and I'll be getting copies from my publisher probably by the end of this month.

All that's to say, give yourself some room. Sometimes we're our own worst critics, our own worst enemies.

I do know what you mean, Barbara.  I did a lot of wincing as I read my book aloud to the girls recently.  (I also realized that is a good way to check for errors and should have been done before publication)
